For business owners

Being findable, beyond social media.

The case for a directory listing in a search-driven web that is increasingly AI-mediated.

Most Boquete businesses have a social media presence. Many do not have a website. They run on word of mouth, Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, and a Facebook page that has not been updated in six months. To them, being online means having an Instagram account. That definition is changing fast.

The way people discover local businesses is shifting from traditional search to AI-mediated search. When a tourist opens ChatGPT and asks "where can I get a coffee farm tour in Boquete?", they get a synthesized answer with citations. Google now puts an AI Overview at the top of many searches, summarizing the answer from cited web pages. Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini work the same way. The ten-blue-links model is no longer the default.

These two facts intersect badly for a business that lives only on social media. The AI tools building those answers cannot read most social media content. Instagram requires login. Facebook business pages are restricted behind authentication walls. WhatsApp is closed by design. TikTok is platform-locked and only partially crawled.

A business with 10,000 Instagram followers may be invisible to a tourist asking ChatGPT for a coffee recommendation in Boquete. The followers are real. The discoverability gap is real too.

Boquete makes this gap wider than most places. Tourists planning trips from abroad rely heavily on search and AI tools before they arrive. Expats and residents from David and Panama City often plan visits in advance. A meaningful share of local-business inquiries come from English-speaking visitors searching in English. The audience here is over-indexed on people who ask ChatGPT or use Google AI Overviews as their first move. Meanwhile, most restaurants, coffee farms, tour operators, and services do not have websites. They have Instagram and WhatsApp.

The technical concept is "indexable, structured web content." Some web surfaces have it. Some do not.

Crawlable and citable by AI search:

  • Plain HTML websites
  • Directory listings on crawled domains
  • Travel and review sites (TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet)
  • News articles
  • Blog posts and editorial guides
  • Pages with structured data, especially LocalBusiness markup
  • Google Business Profile, when properly set up

Not reliably crawlable:

  • Instagram (login required for full access)
  • Facebook business pages (restricted)
  • WhatsApp (closed by design)
  • TikTok (platform-locked; partial crawl at best)
  • Private accounts of any kind
  • Image-only posts without alt text or captions

The difference is whether the page can be read by a tool that does not have a login. AI search engines do not log in. If your business content lives behind a login wall, those engines cannot see it.

Every listing on this site, free tier included, ships as:

  • A crawled, indexed HTML page on a respected directory domain
  • LocalBusiness structured data with name, category, location, contact, opening hours
  • Bilingual content surfacing in both English and Spanish queries
  • Topical context from category pages, neighborhood pages, and editorial guides
  • BreadcrumbList structured data placing the business in the directory hierarchy
  • Clickable contact (phone, WhatsApp, email, website) at every tier
  • Editor-verified status that signals trust to AI tools and human readers

This is what AI tools look at when deciding what to cite. The listing is not a website replacement. It is a credible, structured, citable record that puts the business in the search-discoverable web. Some businesses eventually want a full website. Most do not need one if they have a strong directory listing.

Verify it yourself

This is the most useful test, and the cheapest. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google. Ask about a Boquete business or category you know well: "best coffee farm tour in Boquete," "where to get good empanadas in Boquete," "Boquete dentist." Read what those tools cite. If your business is in the citations, the discoverability is already working. If not, this is where it should start.

What this doesn't promise

This is a directory listing, not a magic trick. Worth being explicit about what is and is not on offer.

  • This does not promise your business will rank #1 anywhere. Ranking is determined by the search engine or the AI tool, not by us.
  • This does not promise specific AI citations. We can put your business in the readable set; we cannot guarantee which AI tool cites which business when.
  • This does not replace a real website if you need one. A custom site is still the right answer for businesses with e-commerce, custom branded landing pages, or content publishing needs.
  • This does not promise specific traffic or conversion numbers. Discoverability is the input; the rest depends on your business.
  • This is not anti-social-media. Instagram and WhatsApp are good for talking to existing customers and building community. They are just not where new customers find you anymore.

The pitch is "this is the missing layer," not "this is everything."
